A rise and recline chair is a long-term purchase, and the details that matter most are often the least glamorous ones. Here is what experienced buyers check.

Fit comes first

• Seat height: your feet should rest flat on the floor with knees at roughly 90 degrees
• Seat depth: you should be able to sit back fully with a small gap behind your knees
• Seat width: comfortable without being so wide that the arms are out of reach
• Back height: the headrest should support your head, not push it forward

Mechanism and controls

Try the handset. Buttons should be easy to see and press, and the chair should move smoothly and quietly. Ask what happens in a power cut — many chairs have a battery backup that returns the chair to a seated position.

Fabric and cleaning

Ask whether the fabric is treated, how it should be cleaned, and whether replacement covers or arm caps are available. Wipe-clean options are worth considering if spills are likely.

Warranty and aftercare

• How long is the warranty on motors, frame and upholstery separately?
• Is labour included, or parts only?
• Are home visits included, or is the chair collected for repair?
• Is there a servicing option after the warranty ends?

Delivery and setup

Confirm that the provider will deliver to the room of your choice, assemble the chair, demonstrate it and take away the packaging. Ask about access and measure doorways in advance.
