Single motor vs dual motor rise and recline chairs
The practical difference between single and dual motor riser recliners, and how to work out which one suits you.
This is the single most common question people ask when comparing riser recliners, and the answer is more about how you sit than about technical specification.
Single motor chairs
One motor drives both the backrest and the legrest together. As the legrest rises, the back reclines in a fixed relationship. They are simpler, usually less expensive, and perfectly comfortable for many people.
Dual motor chairs
Two motors move the backrest and legrest independently. That means you can raise your legs while sitting upright, or recline further back — including close to a flat position on some models.
Which suits you?
- You mainly want help standing up and a comfortable TV position — a single motor chair is often enough
- You want your legs raised while staying upright to read or eat — dual motor
- You spend long periods in the chair, or nap in it — dual motor
- You have swelling in the legs and have been advised to elevate them — dual motor
A note on tilt-in-space
Some dual motor chairs also offer tilt-in-space, which keeps your hips and knees at a fixed angle while the whole seat tilts. It is a specialist feature and worth discussing directly with a provider if posture support is a priority.
