How to compare adjustable beds
What to look at when comparing motorised adjustable beds, and why the mattress deserves as much attention as the base.
Adjustable bed comparisons get confusing because the base and the mattress are usually described together, even though they are two separate decisions.
The base
- Single or dual configuration — a dual bed is two linked adjustable singles
- Whether the head, the legs, or both adjust
- Memory positions and handset design
- Bed height, for safe and comfortable transfers
- Battery backup for power cuts
Why the mattress matters so much
An adjustable base needs a flexible mattress. Pocket sprung and reflex foam mattresses are the usual choices; a traditional open-coil or firm orthopaedic mattress will not bend correctly and can be damaged. Ask providers to name the exact mattress included rather than describing it only as 'included'.
Practical points people forget
- Delivery access, particularly for upstairs bedrooms
- Whether your existing bed will be removed and disposed of
- Bedding — adjustable beds often need deeper fitted sheets
- How quietly the motors run if a partner sleeps beside you
Getting a fair comparison
Ask each provider to describe the base, the mattress, the headboard and delivery separately. Two beds that sound similar can contain very different mattresses.
