Adjustable bed buying guide
What to check before buying a motorised adjustable bed: mattress type, height, access, controls and warranty.
If you are considering an adjustable bed for the first time, these are the points that make the biggest practical difference once the bed is in your home.
1. Decide what you need the bed to do
Comfort while reading, easier getting in and out, leg elevation, or breathing comfort at night are all valid reasons — and they point towards different specifications.
2. Choose the mattress carefully
- Pocket sprung: responsive, breathable and widely recommended for adjustable bases
- Reflex or memory foam: contours well, tends to sleep warmer
- Avoid rigid orthopaedic or open-coil mattresses on an adjustable base
3. Get the height right
Bed height affects how easy it is to stand up safely. As a rough guide, sitting on the edge of the bed you should be able to place both feet flat on the floor.
4. Check the controls
Handsets vary. Look for large, clearly labelled buttons, and ask whether the bed has memory positions and a one-touch flat setting.
5. Check power and safety
- Is there a battery backup that returns the bed to flat in a power cut?
- Where will the mains lead run, and is a socket nearby?
- Is the motor quiet enough not to disturb a partner?
6. Confirm delivery and access
Adjustable beds are heavy. Confirm whether the bed comes in sections, whether delivery includes assembly in the bedroom, and whether your old bed will be removed.
7. Read the warranty
Frames, motors and mattresses often carry different warranty lengths. Ask whether labour and home visits are covered.
